Cultural Criticism: Test 2

Make sure to look through the entire document and read the instructions carefully.

I have created a link on the Canvas site under “Assignments” for uploads of Word documents. Please follow the instructions on Blackboard for uploading your documents.

Please write an essay on one of the topics listed below.

TEST: CHOOSE ONE OF THE COURSE TOPICS WE HAVE DISCUSSED IN CLASS (see below).

The point of your essay is to summarize key concepts (and people) for the categories of critical theory we have studied thus far (information from the book chapter) and then link that information to the specific essays we have studied. This test is intended to provide the opportunity to reflect on how well you have assimilated the material. You should, therefore, focus on synthesizing your ideas and analyzing the material rather than compiling an exhaustive, comprehensive, encyclopedic list of random facts. Please make sure to organize your comments within paragraphs and include an introduction and conclusion. Also provide references for any direct quotations.

Your essay should be two-to-three pages of typed, double- spaced text (12-pt. font). If you include direct quotes from the reading, please use quotation marks and cite your source using in-text citations). You may use your notes and books/essays to answer the questions.

Psy 4600 number 1

Note: You must complete and receive feedback on this assessment before moving on to submit Assessment 2.

Use the Capella library to locate two psychology research articles: a quantitative methods article and a qualitative methods article. These do not need to be on the same topic, but if you have a research topic in mind for your proposal (see Assessment 5), you may wish to pick something similar for this assessment. Read each article carefully.

Then, in a 2–3 page assessment, address the following elements:

  1. Summarize the research question and hypothesis, the research methods, and the overall findings.
  2. Compare the research methodologies used in each study. In what ways are the methodologies similar? In what ways are they different? (Be sure to use the technical psychological terms we are studying.)
  3. Describe the sample and sample size for each study. Which one used a larger sample and why? How were participants selected?
  4. Describe the data collection process for each study. What methods were used to collect the data? Surveys? Observations? Interviews? Be specific and discuss the instruments or measures fully—what do they measure? How is the test designed?
  5. Summarize the data analysis process for each study. How was the data analyzed? Were statistics used? Were interviews coded?
  6. In conclusion, craft 1–2 paragraphs explaining how these two articles illustrate the main differences between quantitative and qualitative research.
Additional Requirements
  • Written communication:Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Your assessment should be formatted according to current APA guidelines for style and formatting.
  • Length: A typical response will be 2–3 typed and double-spaced pages.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

The Triple Bottom Line

The concept behind the “triple bottom line” is that companies are responsible to all their stakeholders. This includes everyone who is involved with the company whether directly or indirectly, as well as the planet on which we all live. This approach sees shareholders as part of the stakeholder group, but only as part of it. Before writing your response to this week’s discussion, please review the following resource for more details on the triple bottom line: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newSTR_79.htm.

For this week’s discussion, please respond to the following:

  1. How would you implement the concept of Triple Bottom Line (People, Planet, Profit) at the NAB company you created?

Notes:

  • Your response should have three headings, each focusing on an aspect of the triple bottom line as outlined below.
  • Check out Chapter 14: Social Responsibility & Sustainability for more information.
  • You will use this week’s information in Assignment 3: Ethics and Social Responsibility Plan.

Keep the following format in mind as you complete this week’s discussion:

  • Profit – When looking at profit from this theory’s perspective, the idea is that profits will help empower and sustain the community as a whole, and not just represent a benefit for the shareholders. (Briefly explain your approach.)
  • People – Discuss your approach to care about suppliers, customers, community, employees. (For example, to care about employees you can provide a good working environment, training and development opportunities, healthcare, etc.)
  • Planet – Discuss your approach to minimize your impact on the environment. (An example would be to create processes to minimize waste or reduce energy usage; maybe you are using recycled materials, etc.)

Assignment 1: Who's picking up the puffed rice?

For this assignment, visit your local grocery store to observe and record behaviors in the various aisles. Your visit should be long enough to observe several behaviors and situations. Read the assignment thoroughly before your observational visit in order to watch for specific behaviors.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Identify the store and the day and time you made your observation.
  2. Analyze the behaviors you observed to determine how consumers progressed through the consumer behavior process while in different aisles.
  3. Assess how consumers determine value for their various purchases. This can be addressed with at least two (2) specific consumer examples or by combining all the consumers you observed.
  4. Pick two specific consumers that seemed to be very different from each other. Contrast how these two (2) consumers progressed through the consumer perception process.
  5. Analyze how different manufacturers motivated consumers to pick their specific brands. Articulate thoroughly the behaviors displayed and tactics used by the store or manufacturer to motivate the purchase.
  6. Record all your observations in a table placed in an Appendix.

Pitfalls that can occur during the communication process

Chapter 13 of your text notes two significant pitfalls that can occur during the communication process: filtering and perception. Thinking back on your own personal experience, you have likely experienced the impact of one or both of these blockades to perfect understanding. In this discussion, you will share an example and address how the communication experience might have been better handled.

Using your own experience as well as the material from Chapter 13 of the text, address the following in your response:

  • Define ‘perception’ and ‘filtering’ in your own words.
  • Describe the communication encounter you experienced that was influenced by either perception and/or filtering.
  • How did the effect of a communication pitfall impact both the sender and receiver during the communication process? Give at least one specific example for each party.
  • With your newfound knowledge of communication pitfalls, what could you have done differently in the situation to avoid any negative impact of perception and/or filtering?

Conflict management in professional health care settings

Purpose:

As a manager, you will need to be effective at navigating conflict. You don’t need to enjoy it, but you can’t avoid it. Avoiding conflict in the short term only delays the inevitable and usually results in needing to address issues that have grown bigger in the future.

In this lesson, you will need to address an issue that is threatening the success of your information governance implementation plan.

Scenario:

The hospital has a zero-tolerance policy on bullying, though it has been enforced unevenly across departments. Some department managers seem hesitant to approach employees who are bullies. It is almost like they are afraid of the employee themselves and prefer to avoid the conflict.

You took a hands-off approach in the past out of fear of rocking the boat and losing employees. You now realize that tolerating bullying may be affecting morale, and you think you may be losing employees because of it. Because of this, it is time to step in and take action.

As you have begun to implement the IG plan, it has become apparent that Suzanne (Health information management employee) is sabotaging the plan. She has been telling other department employees that they do not need to do the new tasks associated with the project. She has also been belittling Pauline, who has been excited about the new duties. There has even been some name calling involved.

Instructions:

Develop a brief, (about 3-pages) paper for how you will address the scenario.

1. Consider the steps described in the Kislik video (also listed below) to develop an evidence-based plan to outline how you will deal with the conflict. Be specific about the actions that need to be taken (e.g., who, what, when).

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l-AOBz69KU

  • Steps:
  • Deal with the dysfunctional person
  • Get the right people involved in the resolution
  • Alignment (consistent understanding of the goals)
  • Find allies at all level
  • Teach new habits

2. How will you stabilize and monitor the change?

3. How does the organizational and unit culture impact on your plan to deal with the resistance?

4. Be sure to cite your sources.

Be sure to include your name on your paper. APA format is not required (e.g., running head, page numbers, abstract). However, you must cite your sources in text and on a reference page.
