Module 3 Notes: Essay Examples

Choose at least three of the following genre types to explore. In the links below each genre, you will find information about the genre and a sample.

Narrative Essays

Narrative essays tell a story of some kind, and narrative is a genre that plays a role in a lot of writing both inside and outside of academia. In a writing class, you may be asked to tell a story about your experiences as a writer. In a nursing class, you may be asked to narrate events with patients. In the workplace, you may be asked to write a police report or provide details related to a workplace accident. The sample below provides you with an example of a narrative essay written by a student.

Expository Essays

Expository essays can take a variety of forms, but they differ from narrative essays in structure. A narrative essay tells a story, and an expository essay makes points and uses evidence to support a thesis statement. The following sample is an argumentative essay. It is important to note that not all expository essays are argumentative in nature, but they should all make an assertion of some kind in a thesis statement. The sample below should provide some insight into a basic expository essay for a college class. A research paper is a type of expository essay you may have already encountered in your academic writing experience.

Lab Reports

Lab reports are a common genre in academic writing that involves the description of a process. The sample lab report you see here includes notes about the rhetorical decisions the student made. This sample lab report comes from North Carolina State University, but it is important to note that there may be different expectations within this genre based on your class and professor.

Literature Reviews

A literature review is a common genre you are likely to encounter in a wide variety of academic programs, especially as you advance toward your degree. A literature review provides a summary and analysis of your research on a topic. The “literature” is really the research you have gathered on your topic. In a literature review, your goal is to do more than summarize your source material. Your goal is to make connections and find common themes in your research. Here is a sample literature review.

Case Studies

A case study is a genre that exists in many academic fields. You may encounter case studies in science, social science, and healthcare courses. A case study is an in-depth or close examination of one example within a topic. You may encounter a case study in an individual person’s medical situation. The organization of a case study will vary from field to field, but all case studies focus on providing an in-depth analysis of the topic.

The following sample case study is an example from the field of Nursing.

Business Reports

Although business writing includes genres you will encounter in the workplace, you will also encounter some of these genres in your college business classes. Like academic writing, business writing values clarity and conciseness, but the writing you do for business may take many forms. Memos, proposals, and reports are common genres. For some genres in business writing, such as memos, templates exist online and in your word processing program. These templates are generally helpful. For longer works, samples often exist on the web. Here is a sample of a report written in the business report style.
